Splay, 1992, granite and steel, 64"h x134"w x56"d

SPLAY as all of my work is, in a general sense, about the pairing or marying of natural and human made.

This work takes its title from position of the individual elements which suggests the act of “opening” or ” spreading out” (a verb). The fact the the heavy stone elements suggest that they are caught and held in a state of arrested motion reinfoces the verb idea of movement or action.

I like also that the title can also be interepreted as a noun (or thing) as an achitectural detail: a sloped or beveled surface, or a surface that forms an oblique angle with an other, as when an opening through a wall for a door or window, widens toward one face.
