"SISYPHEAN CIRCLE (crown)", 2025, granite and pigmented and sealed steel, 9.25"h x12"w x3"d (23 x 30 x 7cm)
available
Pronunciation: 'si-s&-f&s
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin, from Greek Sisyphos
: a legendary king of Corinth condemned eternally to repeat
the cycle of rolling a heavy rock up a hill in Hades only to have it roll
down again as it nears the top.
This sculpture was created using a portion of a crown gear, which,
when combined with the naturally shaped piece of granite,
emphasizes Van Alstine's career-long focus on integrating natural materials with industrial objects.
The work embodies his enduring interest in combining and contrasting
how we perceive and understand nature in relation to the built environment.
